Mr. Russell Knox "Rusty" Sowell, age 76, of San Augustine, Texas, passed away Monday, September 13, 2021, at a Houston, Texas, hospital.
Rusty was born January 9, 1945, in Jasper, Texas, to parents Jiles K. and Dorothy (McGilberry) Sowell. He grew up in Buna, Texas, and spent several years living in that area. He was a construction superintendent and oversaw the building of many monumental buildings in the East Texas area. Rusty later moved to San Augustine, Texas, where he built and operated Fausto's Restaurant for a number of years.
He was a faithful servant of his Lord. Rusty was a member of First Baptist Church in Broaddus. Rusty was a dedicated member of the Gideons International and very instrumental that ministry and encouraging other Gideon members.
His survivors include his wife, Raylynn Sowell of San Augustine, Texas; his daughters, Jennifer Hunter of Douglass, Texas, and Jill Cole and husband Buck of Kirbyville, Texas; a son, R.K. Sowell of San Augustine, Texas; step-daughter, Kathy Scott and husband Neil of College Station, Texas; a step-son, Mike Orsack of Navasota, Texas; his mother, Dorothy Sowell Carlin of Hemphill, Texas; his "Brazilian daughter," Bruna Leao; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Jimmie Sowell; his father, Jiles K. Sowell; and a brother, Danny Sowell.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 17, 2021, at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home, 316 W. Columbia Street in San Augustine, Texas.
Funeral services are set for 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 17, 2021, at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Wayne Barth and Charles Sharp officiating. Interment will follow at Sowell Cemetery in San Augustine County, Texas.
Pallbearers: Neil Scott, Buck Cole, Matthew Hunter, Nick Hunter, Ethan Cole, R.K. Sowell, Seth Scott, Trent Moore, Rob Scott, and Chase Scott.
