Robert A. "Andy" Barnett

Robert Andrew Barnett, “Andy,” passed away on Friday, September 16, 2022, at CHI St. Luke’s Medical Center in Lufkin, Texas.

Born on September 14, 1942, in Houston, Texas, he was the only child of L.A. and Leola Barnett. Andy graduated from Pasadena High School and attended Texas A&M before enlisting in the U.S. Army. A penchant for languages and international politics led Andy to focus on military intelligence, but after a tour in Viet Nam, he returned to the states and entered civilian life. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University and began a new career in law enforcement, participating in many advanced training opportunities including attending the FBI Academy at Quantico, Virginia. After working several years as a policeman, Andy joined Homeland Security, with assignments in San Antonio, Montana, and Guam. After retirement, he returned to East Texas and settled in San Augustine County.

Away from the workplace, Andy was an active part of his church family, playing the piano and organ, teaching Sunday School, and serving as a deacon. He also was a voracious reader, enjoying books about politics and history.

Andy is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nina Lister Barnett; daughters, Karen Cunningham and husband Tim of San Augustine County, Katheryn Hall and husband Rodney of Lubbock, Texas, and Kimberly Petty and husband Jay of Nacogdoches, Texas; grandchildren, Caleb Hall and wife Sarah, Rebekah Hall, Mark Cunningham and wife Jordan, Brooke Lopez and husband Donte, and Bethany Petty; and the newest addition to the family, great-grandson Joseph Lopez. Additional survivors include father-in-law, L.W. “Red” Lister, and sister-in-law Ann Bridges and husband Alvin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, L.A. and Leola Barnett.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, September 18, 2022, at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home, located at 316 W. Columbia Street in San Augustine, Texas.

Funeral services are set for 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 19, 2022, at Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel with Bro. Troy Richardson officiating. Interment will follow at Magnolia Springs Cemetery in San Augustine County.

Pallbearers: Rodney Hall, Jay Petty, Caleb Hall, Mark Cunningham, Donte Lopez, and Curtis Bridges, with Tim Cunningham as honorary pallbearer.
