Rena Bertrand Bagesse, 91, a resident of San Augustine, Texas, and a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, passed peacefully into eternal rest on June 24, 2021.
Visitation and Rosary are scheduled for Sunday, June 27, 2021, from the hours of 4 to 5 p.m. at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home in San Augustine. Visitation and Mass will be Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Winnie, Texas. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.
Rena was born May 25, 1930, in Kaplan, Louisiana, to Felicia Istre Bertrand and Willie Bertrand Sr. She was raised with her two brothers, Lawrence and Willie Jr., in Winnie, Texas, where she graduated in 1948 from East Chambers High School. Always active and involved in chorus and basketball, she excelled at both. She was a forward with the 1947 and 1948 State Champion East Chambers High Buccaneer Girls Basketball teams and a Chorus Leader in 1947.
She married Carl Bagesse from Beaumont, Texas, in 1950 and continued her love for sports – anything with a ball was her favorite. She was especially a fan of all UT sports, attended several UT football games and faithfully watched them on TV. She was married to Carl for 55 years, until his death in 2005.
She was loved and admired by everyone who knew her and was a friend for life if you had the privilege of meeting her. She was quick-witted, always up for a road trip or ball game. She was equally wonderful at sitting and listening and offering advice if asked for and visiting about her favorite things… her children, grandchildren… and sports. Her cajun roots ran deep; she loved crawfish etouffee and her spaghetti sauce was legendary with family and friends.
She’s described as the most faithful, loving, supportive mom, grandmother, sister and friend that a person could have. Proverbs 31:10: “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies and pearls.” This in a few words, describes Rena.
