R.B. (Bob) Roper

Mr. Robert Basil "Bob" Roper, age 92, of San Augustine, Texas, passed away Thursday, January 28, 2021, at his residence.

Mr. Roper was born December 18, 1928, in Milam, Texas, to parents Basil S. Roper and Eva McGown Roper. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and graduated from the University of Texas with a BBA degree. 

He enjoyed a long successful career as a General Motors dealer. Bob and his father began operating Roper Motor Company in San Augustine in 1962. He retired in 2001 with the sale of the dealership. He was honored by as "Businessman of the Year" by the Chamber of Commerce and was very active in community and civic organizations, including the Lions Club, the Historical Society, and the Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Roper served on the boards of directors for First Savings Association of East Texas and First National Bank.

Mr. Roper was a longtime faithful member of San Augustine's First United Methodist Church. He served a number of years on the administrative council in addition to may other offices and committees with the church.

His survivors include his daughters, Terri Roper Wubbena and husband Jan of Siloam Springs, Arkansas, Sandi Roper Russell and husband Rick of San Augustine, Texas, and Patti Roper McLerran and husband Rod of San Augustine, Texas; and his grandchildren, Rob Wubbena, Mary Wubbena, Ryan Russell, Bobby McLerran and Cade, and Roy McLerran and Marina.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Roper, in 2008; his parents, Basil and Eva McGown Roper; and a sister, Frances Roper Fisher.

Private family services are being planned.

Interment will be at the McGown Cemetery, located near Milam, Texas, in Sabine County, Texas.
