Obituary

Mr. Phil Sublett, age 73, passed away Sunday, September 18, 2022, in San Augustine County, Texas.

He was born April 13, 1949, in Nacogdoches, Texas. Phil graduated from San Augustine High School with the Class of 1967.

He was born swinging a rope and loved to ride Cap Pistol (his first horse) early in life. Phil rodeoed his entire life--starting to steer wrestle at the arena that still sits in front of his home. He was hauling with Robert and Laurette Powell, Charles Alford, Harlan Alexander, and many others. Phil qualified for the NFR 1977, held in Oklahoma City for steer wrestling, landing him at 6th in the world.

On April 26, 1980, Phil married the absolute love of his life, Vicky Ferguson, in Port Arthur, Texas. In true cowboy fashion, their honeymoon was spent at the rodeo. Phil continued his rodeo career through 1984.

Phil and Vicky had three children together. They loved hosting friends over at the infamous "Dog Pens" for cookouts and fun. They enjoyed dancing. They also loved playing "42" on Tuesday nights and later found great pleasure watching their children and grandchildren continue the family tradition of rodeos and livestock activities.

He was a member of Redland Masonic Lodge #3 and the San Augustine County Cowboy Church. Phil was also an intrical part of Center Livestock Auction Barn. He was the absolute best dad and "PawSub" ever!

His survivors include his wife, Vicky Sublett of San Augustine; son, Brandon Sublett of Rosevine, Texas; daughter, Angela Rodell and husband Trampas of Centerville, Texas; daughter, Exa Melton and husband Pepper of Madill, Oklahoma; mother, Jane Sublett of San Augustine; brother, Steve Sublett and wife Vanda of San Augustine; sister, Molly Sublett of San Augustine; brother, Joe Sublett and wife Christine of Mont Belvieu; grandchildren, Jaydon and Keagon Sublett of Gordeaux, Alabama, Alex Rodell, Avery Cordes, and Trampas Rodell II, all of Centerville, and Kyann, Riggin, and Emery Melton, all of Madill; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Sublett; and grandparents, Julia Mitchell, Manse Mitchell, Marguerite Sublett, and Phillip Sublett.
