Norman Leon McMurry

March 7, 1926 ~ February 21, 2023 (age 96) 96 Years Old

Obituary

Norman Leon McMurry (known as Leon), born March 7, 1926, died peacefully in Chicago, Illinois, on February 21, 2023, at the age of 96 years.

Leon was a much loved father of eight children (Ronald McMurry, MD; Judy Hutchinson; Sue Davenport; Debra Zugaro; Terry McMurry; David McMurry; Sarah McMurry-Hogue, MD; and Amy Taylor, DVM) and grandfather of 23.   He was a beloved husband of 50 years to Amanda McMurry (nee Wiggins) of Great Britain.  Amanda preceded him in death on September 3, 2018.

His accomplishments are too many to mention here. He was one of the original gas and oil pipeline engineers known for his innovative method of bending pipe. He was much sought after for difficult projects even in his later years.  He travelled the world first in the US Merchant Marines (WWII), then on numerous pipeline jobs particularly in the Middle East, South America, Indonesia, and Europe.  Diligent, extremely hardworking, and never known to be afraid of anything, epitomized him as a true Texan. He fought courageously with his battle with dementia over the last few years but he never lost his sense of humor. He loved fishing, hunting, gardening, rehabilitating/building new houses, and constructing the odd lake.

Leon was born in Roganville, Texas, to Samuel McMurry and Beatrice McMurry (nee Phelps). He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; five sisters; one son, Terry McMurry; one grandson, Chad McMurry; and his first wife, Bobbie Jo Williams.
