Mrs. Madeline Avanell "Nell" Wisnoski of San Augustine County and former longtime resident of Conroe, passed away Friday, May 22, 2020, at Colonial Pines Healthcare Center at the age of 93 years, 11 months, 25 days.
Mrs. Wisnoski was born May 28, 1926, near Broaddus, Texas, to parents Ivy Reuben Stringer and Jessie Oma (Ponder) Stringer. She was a former longtime resident of the Conroe and Houston areas before returning to the East Texas area. She was a longtime active member of the United Methodist Church.
Nell spent early growing up years in San Augustine County but later moved to Houston with her family. After high school graduation she attended Massey Business College and during World War II she worked as a lady welder for Hughes Tool Company. She met John Wisnoski at a USO type dance and they were married August 4, 1945, in Houston.
In addition to her faithful care for her family, her great love of flowers opened wonderful opportunities for Nell as she became a successful florist. This began as helping decorate and arrange flowers for church services. Her talent led fellow church members and friends relying on her to help with floral needs out of her home and she eventually opened Wisnoski Florist as well as working with other shops later.
Singing was a great joy in her life. Nell excitedly participated in the “Happy Strings Ukulele Band” sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Conroe for 15 years as the lead female singer, starting in 1990.
She and John moved to Conroe in 1986 and he preceded her in death on May 25, 1989. Nell was also preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Jamie Aaron Kelley; and sisters, Laverne Chandler and Oralene Voigt.
Her survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Dana and Roger Kelley of Zavalla, Texas; daughter, Joan Wisnoski of The Woodlands, Texas; and a grandson, Jarrod “Colin” Kelley of Conroe, Texas.
