Larry Gene Smith, age 90, of San Augustine, Texas, passed away Thursday, January 11, 2024, in San Augustine. He was born July 14, 1933, in Sour Lake, Texas, to parents Kirby Smith and Florence Ella (Rawson) Smith.
Growing up he lived several places including Marshall, Beaumont, Texas City, New Braunfels and several other places. By his high school years, he moved back to San Augustine and as a typical atheletic student, he played football, basketball, and ran track for the San Augustine Wolves. While in high school Larry met and courted a smart, cute, young lady named Doniece Crawford. They were married on August 5, 1954, in Nacogdoches, Texas, by her father Linnis Crawford, a Baptist minister. They had four children.
Following his years at Stephen F. Austin State College, he became an owner and operator of heavy equipment, and worked along with his father, Kirby, for 20-25 years in the landscaping and earthmoving business in Shreveport and Houston. Later while in Houston, Larry became a home improvement salesman for Sears for over 15 years.
After he retired from Sears, he and Doniece moved back to San Augustine to take over and operate the Smith Flower Gardens. They raised flowers and greenhouse tomatoes until just a couple years ago. Some of Larry's greatest passions were raising tomatoes, carpentry, equipment operation, as well as riding motorcycles, and 4-wheelers in the mountains of Colorado with family and friends.
Larry served as a deacon and an elder in the San Augustine Church of Christ and was a faithful member until his death on January 11, 2024, having obtained 90 years of age. No words can express the love and appreciation he and his family have for this congregation of the Lord.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Doniece; son, Steve Warren Smith and wife Laura of San Augustine; son, Robert Glenn Smith and wife Teresa of Tomball; daughter, Lisa Genette Meier of San Augustine; daughter, Sharon Annette Barbee of Pueblo Colorado; and one brother, Don Phillip Smith and wife Chris of Tyler; 9 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Kirby and Florence Smith in 2002.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 20, 2024, at the San Augustine Church of Christ building on Market Street. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m.
