Mr. James "Pine Top" Welsh of McMahan's Chapel passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at his residence at the age of 91 years, 7 months, 30 days.
He was born August 11, 1932, in Leake County, Mississippi, to parents Myrtle (Stewart) and John Thomas Welsh and had lived in Sabine County, Texas, for most of his life. "Pine Top" was a hard worker and his jobs had included a lineman, gravel hauling, and timber harvesting. Mr. Welsh pioneered the glauconite "blue rock" industry, which revolutionized construction of roads, streets, and parking lots.
His survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Kathy Welsh of McMahan's Chapel, Rocky and Billie Welch of Longview, and Stacy and Christie Scott of Spring; a sister, Quay Brown of Mississippi; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2024, at McMahan's Chapel Church, located on Spur 35. Interment will follow at McMahan's Chapel Cemetery.
