James Michael "Mike" Smith

Mr. James Michael "Mike" Smith of San Augustine, Texas, passed away Friday, March 29, 2024, at Nacogdoches Medical Center at the age of 74 years, 3 months, and 20 days.

Mike was born December 9, 1949, in Pt. Arthur, Texas, to parents Arlis and Billie Jean (Kirbow) Smith. He graduated from Newton High School in 1968 and East Texas Baptist College in 1973 with a Bachelor's in Business and Religion.  At ETBC, Mike met the love of his life, Ilene.  After living in the Longview and the Dallas area, the Smith family moved to San Augustine in 1990.  Mike was a businessman and after many years in the insurance business, he began working in hospitality with hotels and restaurants.  Mike was also an ordained minister and preached at many churches over the past 56 years.  He was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church.  Mike was also a former president of the DeRidder Louisiana Chamber of Commerce.  

His survivors include his wife, Ilene Jones Smith of San Augustine, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Jenny and Jason Tanner of San Augustine, Texas; sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Anissa Smith of Chireno, Texas, and Jason and Nikki Smith of Forest, Mississippi; grandchildren, Erica, Michael, Miles, Brandi, Katy, and Makenna; great-grandchildren, Dallas, Preston, and Amelia; sisters and brother-in-law, Connie King of Jasper, Texas, and Cheryl and Joe Wilkinson of Brazoria, Texas; sisters-in-law, Laura Smith of Jasper, Texas, and Lutherine and Lenard Sowell of Nacogdoches, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arlis and Billie Jean Smith; an infant son, Terry Michael Smith; and his brother, Donnie Smith.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home, located at 316 W. Columbia Street in San Augustine, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jim Moss and Rev. Frank Holrath officiating. Committal service and interment will follow at the McRae Cemetery, located at 794 County Road 220 near San Augustine, Texas.
