Mr. James E. Bucklew Jr. was born in Houston, Texas, on December 18, 1943, and passed away in San Augustine, Texas, on January 7, 2021, attaining the age of 77. Although he grew up in Houston, he was a longtime resident of San Augustine.
James served his country in the Coast Guard during the Vietnam Era and attained the rank of EN2. While on tour he was injured and held captive, eventually managing to escape. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and First Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of Redland Masonic Lodge #3 for most of his adult life. James was always willing to help people where he could and spent years as a jobs skill instructor to inmates at the Texas Department of Corrections. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Johnson Bucklew.
James is survived by one sister, Martha Hedge and husband Vernon of McKinney, Texas; brother-in-law, Terry Johnson and wife Jo Anna of San Augustine, Texas; nieces, Christy Hedge of Tyler, Texas, Debbie Gamble and husband Michael of Prosper, Texas, Corrie Harris and husband Chris of Plano, Texas, Jamie Busby and husband David of McKinney, Texas, Connie Johnson Wood and husband Ricky of Humble, Texas, and Abby Johnson Lout and husband Dusty of San Augustine, Texas; and a nephew, Perry Johnson and wife Linda of Cooper, Texas. They all have favorite stories of his teasing and tricks as well as his help in many ways. Their children and grandchildren and a host of other family and friends honor him.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 12, 2021, at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 12, 2021, at Liberty Hill Cemetery, located on Highway 147 North.
