Herbert Thomas (Tom) Johnson, age 79, of San Augustine, Texas, passed away Sunday, December 26, 2021, at his San Augustine home.
Tom was born November 23, 1942, in Lubbock, Texas, to parents Herbert (Herb) and Billie (Mitchell) Johnson. He grew up in Lubbock and attended Monterey High School and Texas Tech in Lubbock. Tom worked for the Bell System (which included Western Electric, S.W. Bell, AT&T, Nokia, and Lucent Technologies) for 42 years. Tom began his career in Lubbock, and later worked in the Amarillo, Austin, and Dallas offices.
In 1970, Tom became the first Texas candidate to participate in the new, elite Cooperstown, New York Data Training Program. Upon completion of his Cooperstown Data certification, Tom was transferred to Austin, Texas.
He worked as the Lucent Technologies National Account Manager for GTE/Verizon in the Dallas office when he retired in 2003.
Tom was a devoted husband, marvelous father, caring grandfather, and a kind and generous friend. Upon his retirement, Tom became an official Weather Watcher, an avid Texas Master Gardener, and a beloved community volunteer.
Tom and Samye Joyce Malone, his wife of 57 years were married on September 26, 1964. Survivors also include daughter Christy Johnson of Jasper, Georgia; daughter Jodi Johnson of San Augustine; granddaughter Ashley Johnson of San Augustine; brother-in-law, Mike Malone and wife Billie Malone of San Augustine; niece Joy Malone Kling and husband Jeremy of Austin, Texas; nephews Michael Malone and wife Jodi of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Rick Russell and wife Sandi of San Augustine, and David Russell and wife Lisa of San Augustine; great-nieces, Kyla and Kristen Malone of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Stella Rose Kling of Austin, Texas; great-nephews Ransom Kling of Austin, Texas, and Ryan Russell of College Station.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Thomas Johnson, Sr and Billie Mitchell Johnson; an infant baby sister; his father-in-law, Sam Malone and wife Margaret; and mother-in law, Joyce Florence Malone.
Graveside service date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to San Augustine Master Gardener Program, Center Affinity Hospice, and San Augustine County Children’s Service Center Fund are suggested.
