Gilbert Lucas Obituary

Mr. Gilbert Roland Lucas of San Augustine, Texas, passed from this life on Thursday, December 3, 2020 at his residence.

He was born in Huntsville, Texas, on May 12, 1938 to Roland M. Lucas and Ercel Cooper Lucas. Gilbert graduated from Huntsville High School.  After graduating, he began working as a detailer for US Steel in Houston, Texas from 1960-1971.  He was drafted into the Army from 1961-1963 and was stationed in Germany.  He was living and working in Houston when he married his wife of 60 years, Margaret Anne Lucas August 28, 1960.  The Lucas and Otis family lived two houses apart and were close friends.  Gilbert used to joke about how he helped raise Margaret since she was four years younger than him.

In 1971, he blew the city dust off of his tires and moved to San Augustine to live between Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend and enjoy fishing.  For many years, he loved to take advantage of the lakes and fishing in tournaments while contracting with steel companies until he retired in 2000. Two of his contracts he was most proud of was the SuperDome in New Orleans and the Mormon Temple in Houston.

Gilbert had a love for traveling and adventure.  He traveled all over the US with his wife, grandchildren and great grandchildren to show them the wonders of the USA.  He loved history and made traveling more interesting with his trivia and teasing.  His favorite places in the whole world were Jackson Mountain in Colorado where he and Margaret spent many weeks camping off-grid exploring and watching wildlife, and fly fishing in Mountain Home, AR.

He spent his life living quietly, loving the simple things in life like fishing, gardening, cooking, music, and family. His wife and family were his whole world. He took grandchildren to the first day of school, taught them how to drive a vehicle and 4wheelers, helped with big homework projects, kept them when they were sick. He let the grandkids in his shop and taught them how to use his tools. Ely has made some incredible woodworking items. He encouraged all kinds of sports and even got out and played most of them with the grandkids. He played a big roll in all of their lives. Kullen was his birthday twin which made his day extra special every year. Kallie was his little shadow and still sat in his lap even though her legs hit the floor. Gilbert wasn’t just a grandfather and great grandfather, he helped raise all of them.

Gilbert is survived by his wife, Margaret Anne Lucas; daughter, Jennifer Lucas Smith; granddaughter, LeAnne Kimray and husband Kevin Kimray;  granddaughter, Lori Corbello and husband, Coy Corbello; and great-grandchildren, Kallie Kimray, Ely Smith, Kullen Kimray, Ethan Kimray, Marissa Corbello, and Brandon Kimray.

He was preceded in death by his father, Roland M. Lucas; mother, Ercel Cooper Lucas;  and daughter, Sheri Lynn Lucas.
