Mr. Elbert Sowell, age 90, of Chireno passed away Saturday, Nov. 21, 2020.
He was born Jan. 25, 1930, in San Augustine County to parents Isaac Clinton and Rosie Pearl (Steptoe) Sowell and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He later attended Massey Business School and embarked on a long successful career in financing. He was president of Chireno State Bank and also had worked at Stone Fort National Bank, Timberland Savings & Loan, and Commercial Bank of Texas in this area, in addition to other banks in other parts of the state.
Mr. Sowell had a great love of all types of outdoor events and activities. He found great pleasure in farming throughout his life time. He served his community well by serving in various leadership roles with civic groups and committees. Mr. Sowell was a longtime member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Nacogdoches.
His survivors include his wife, Peggy Sowell of Chireno; daughter, Jeannie McFarland and husband John of Nacogdoches; son, Ronnie Sowell and wife Liz of Chireno; grandchildren, Jonathan Sowell and wife Kerry of Chireno, Clint Sowell and wife Lacee of Bryan, and Laura Bailey and husband Mason of Nacogdoches; and a great-grandson, Isaac Sowell of Chireno.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Cleatus Sowell, Prentiss Earl Sowell, and Benjamin Sowell.
A graveside service is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2020, at Sowell Cemetery, San Augustine County, with Ronnie Sowell and Clint Sowell officiating.
Pallbearers: Jonathan Sowell, Clint Sowell, John McFarland, Mason Bailey, Stevie Sowell, Rickey Sowell, and Randal Sowell.
