David S. Mangan Obituary

Mr. David Sublett Mangan of San Augustine, Texas, passed away Monday, August 31, 2020, in San Augustine at the age of 82 years, 6 months, and 9 days.

He was born February 22, 1938, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Walter and Mary Sublett Mangan as the oldest son of three children. David grew up in San Augustine, Texas, graduated from San Augustine High School in 1955, and attended St. Augustine Catholic Church while growing up. He was active in football and basketball and enjoyed singing in the choir. After high school graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving active duty for five years and in the Navy Reserves for 10 years.

Mr. Mangan lived in the San Antonio area for many years where he served as a police officer in the 1960s. Later he started his own private investigative service and did security work around the city and  as a golf marshal at various courses.

He enjoyed serving as a referee for basketball games at the high school and college levels and was a member of the Texas Referee Association. An avid golfer, he won several long drive contests in the 1980s and 1990s.

He loved his family most of all, leaving three sons to cherish his memory, Walter D. Mangan and wife Brandy of College Station, Texas, David S. Mangan Jr. and wife Lisa of San Antonio, Texas, and Phillip Mangan and wife Rhunette of San Antonio. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Marguerite "Sissy" Mangan of San Augustine; a special niece/daughter, Jacqueline Trimble of San Augustine; and a host of great-nephews and great-nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Col. W.D. and Mary Mangan; his beloved daughter, Leia Ann Mangan; and his brothers, Mike Mangan and James Harrison "Harry" Mangan.

Memorial services will be announced later with inurnment planned at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
