Billy Rogers Obituary

Memorial services for Mr. William "Bill" Edward Rogers, age 88, of San Augustine County, will be held at 3:00 pm, Sunday, September 22, 2019, at Grapevine Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Welton Blackmon and Bro. Kevin Gratehouse officiating. Bill passed away on Friday, September 13, 2019.
Bill was born August 19, 1931, in San Augustine County to the late William Madison Rogers and Minnie (Wall) Rogers. He grew up in the Macune community, where he attended the old Norwood School. Norwood was later consolidated with the Broaddus School, where Bill graduated in 1948. He moved to Pasadena, Texas with his family, where he worked in the Gulf Atlantic warehouse until he was drafted into the Army in 1952. He was stationed in Japan for one year before joining the reserves and was honorably discharged in1960. Bill returned to the Pasadena area, where he resumed working at Gulf Atlantic, and in the Todd Shipyard. He then joined Adams Distribution, as one of their first delivery drivers, and remained a dedicated employee until his retirement in 1994.
On February 18, 1968, Billy married Birtie Maxine (Evans), Rogers. Although the couple often debated how long they had been married (one insisted they were married in 1967; the other was adamant it was 1968), they finally agreed that 2018 marked their 50th anniversary. Together, Bill and Maxine raised two sons (Ray and Matt), having lost their first son during childbirth. Bill always put his family first and worked hard to provide for his free-spirited wife and boys. Later in life, his calm nature, quick humor, and fondness for sweets made him a favorite amongst his grandchildren. At any family event, Bill might be found sneaking one of his granddaughters an extra treat or playing peek-a-boo with his infant great-grandson.
Above all else, Billy was a devoted and loving husband to Maxine. In many ways, taking care of her kept him going. He doted over Maxine and became her voice, her arms, and her legs as she slowly lost her battle with Parkinson's disease. Having spent more than fifty years together, being without Maxine proved to be too much for Bill to overcome. Only twenty-seven days after Maxine's death on August 17, 2019, Bill left this world to reunite with her.
His survivors include sons, Ray Rogers and his wife, Kathy of San Augustine and Matt Rogers and his wife, Katie of Hawkins; 4 grandchildren, William, Lily, Amelia and Sara, and 1 great-grandchild, Emmett; nieces, Cheryl Cook and her husband, Bill of San Augustine; Deborah Woods and her husband, Donald of San Augustine; great-nephew, Joey Woods and his wife, Heather of San Augustine; sister-in-law, Pat Adkins and her husband, Carrol of San Augustine; brother-in-law, Calvin Evans of Whitehouse along with a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Madison and Minnie (Wall) Rogers; his beloved wife, Birtie Maxine (Evans) Rogers; infant son, and beloved brother, Tommy Rogers and his wife, Patsy (Griffin) Rogers.
