Barbara Ann (Goodwin) Sowell

Mrs. Barbara Ann (Goodwin) Sowell, age 81, of San Augustine County passed away Saturday, April 24, 2021, at CHI St. Luke's Medical Center in Lufkin.

Mrs. Sowell was born February 2, 1940, in San Augustine County to parents Albert and Lillie Belle Goodwin. Barbara was a descendent of the Goodwin family which founded San Augustine County's Goodwin community and was a lifelong resident of that area. She attended Goodwin School until transferring to Broaddus High School. At Broaddus she was valedictorian of her graduating class and also selected "Most Beautiful."

For a number of years, she worked as a teacher's aide for the Broaddus School District. She had a passion for working with many of the special needs students at the school. Serving others, and especially spending time with and helping her family, was her life. A longtime Christian, she enjoyed a lifelong affiliation with Attoyac Baptist Church.

Her survivors include her daughter, Luann Chandler of San Augustine County; a son, Michael Patrick Sowell of San Augustine County; a sister, Margie Jones of Caldwell; grandchildren, Melody Audish, Delia Charlene Tayamo, Rachel Nicole Cantu, Honey Neill, Caleb Wilson, Holly Harvey, Crystal Chisenhall, Jeremy Sowell, Matthew Taylor Sowell, Noah Sowell, Michael McCary, Chaney Sowell, and Cherish Lyman; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Lillie Belle Goodwin; husband, Laree Sowell; a brother, Carl Goodwin; sons, Pruitt Sowell and Jerry Bradford Sowell; and a daughter, Valerie Kay Sowell.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 26, 2021, at Attoyac Baptist Church, located at 600 FM 3316 in San Augustine County.

Funeral services are set for 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2021, at Attoyac Baptist Church, 600 FM 3316, with Bro. Gerald W. Sowell officiating. Committal service and interment will follow at Attoyac Cemetery under the direction of Wyman Roberts Funeral Home in San Augustine.

Pallbearers: Caleb Wilson, Phillip Harvey, Jeremy Sowell, Michael Sowell, Noah Sowell, and Taylor Sowell. Honorary pallbearers: Allen Lyman and Michael McCary.
