Barbara Ann (Nail) Brittain

Mrs. Barbara Ann Brittain of San Augustine passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at the Summit Healthcare Center at the age of 87 years, 6 months, 23 days.

She was born December 28, 1934, in Alton, Illinois, to parents Raymond Earl Nail and Elsie Fay (Patton) Nail and had lived in San Augustine most of her life. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and enjoyed singing in the choir.

Mrs. Brittain was a very loved, respected, and admired teacher. She began her career at West Sabine Elementary School, Pineland, in 1963 and after two years she joined the San Augustine Elementary faculty and remained with San Augustine ISD until her retirement in 1993. Former students often express their love and respect for Mrs. Brittain and how she inspired their love of reading. She shared the same fond memories of her students throughout the years.

Animals held a very special place in her heart. She had rescued a countless number of stray dogs and cats during her life. Her pets were her constant companions.

Her survivors include her children, Lee Brittain and wife Angie of Nacogdoches, Charlie Brittain and wife Sherri of Nacogdoches, and Kathy Brittain and Frank Marshall of San Augustine; two grandsons, Adam Brittain and wife Elmira and Brent Brittain; great-grandchildren, Aiden Brittain, Kiera Brittain, and Bailey Brittain; and her nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Roy Brittain, in 2007; her parents, Raymond Earl and Elsie Fay Nail; her brother, Bill Rutledge; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Brittain; and a great-grandson, Bryce Brittain.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 23, 2022, at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home, located at 316 W. Columbia Street in San Augustine.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 23, 2022, at Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel with Lee Brittain and Rev. Tim Turner officiating. Private committal service will be at the City Cemetery in San Augustine.

Pallbearers: Adam Brittain, Aiden Brittain, Gary Rudisill, Thomas Eddings, Jeff Boyd, Clint Ivy, and Michael Cartwright. Honorary pallbearers: John Butts and Dr. Gordon Jones.

Her family would like to suggest memorial gifts to the First United Methodist Church of San Augustine or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
